An industrial lecture is one of the activities usually held by Chemistry Education UNS by presenting practitioners from various chemical industries. This activity aims to provide insight to students regarding the direct practice of chemistry in the industrial sector and to motivate students before undertaking industrial internships.
On Wednesday (26/10/2022), an industrial lecture was held with Mr. Aloysius Aristya Hendro Pratama, a Process Engineer and Production Senior Staff at PT. Indo Acidatama Tbk. Located in Karanganyar, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia; PT. Indo Acidatama Tbk is a Go Public company in the environmentally friendly international agrochemical industry. PT. Indo Acidatama Tbk. produces chemical products such as ethanol, acetic acid, and ethyl acetate. Acetic acid and ethyl acetate are products that use ethanol as their raw material. Then, agro products such as biological fertilizers and soil fertilizers are also made.
Industrial lectures are held in one of the lecture rooms and can be attended by all Chemistry Education UNS students. On that occasion, Mr. Aristya spoke about the company profile of PT. Indo Acidatama Tbk. as an opening and further explains the production process of their primary product, ethanol.
Mr. Aristya revealed that PT. Indo Acidatama Tbk. is the largest ethanol producer in Indonesia. The ethanol production process is carried out using molasses as a by-product of sugar production, making it more economical and environmentally friendly. Although it is a by-product, the molasses used have certain specifications such as standard thickness (minimum 85 °), sugar content (minimum 54.5%), and optical density (300-400). The molasses used are obtained from a local sugar production company.
Next, the fermentation process is carried out using yeast obtained from local yeast producers. The separation process is carried out using vacuum distillation, which is a separation technique based on very high differences in boiling points, the method used is to lower the pressure lower than 1 atm so that the boiling point becomes low so that the temperature used for distillation does not need to be too high. The resulting ethanol is then stored and distributed.
Besides conveying the general ethanol production process, Mr. Aristya also shared the process of selecting and treating yeast. The yeast selection process is an essential factor in the production of ethanol because it is related to the amount of yield, resistance, and product content. In addition, energy use is also a consideration in the ethanol production process. The exothermic process of ethanol fermentation causes an increase in temperature during the production process, so a cooling agent is needed, which is quite expensive. Then, waste generated from the ethanol production process gets exceptional management so as not to pollute the environment. Certain types of waste are further processed to be produced into fertilizer.
Mr. Aristya said that the company always conducts research to find better innovations and developments for the ethanol production process. He also revealed that his company is very open if Chemistry Education students have innovations regarding raw materials, fermentation processes, and the use of yeast that can increase production yields and reduce the amount of waste generated.
Every year, PT. Indo Acidatama Tbk. producing 50.000 kiloliters of super prime quality ethanol with 96.5% purity. The ethanol produced can be used in the beverage, cosmetic, perfume, cigarette, pharmaceutical, herbal, and hospital industries. Furthermore, it can also be used as a raw material to manufacture other chemicals such as acetaldehyde, acetic acid, ethyl acetate, and ethylene. WOW, who’s excited to work in this industry?
